#5 – Take Advantage of Employee Talent
Recent company closings have increased the unemployment rate, but that also means that many talented employees are looking for work. Often, employees who have left larger companies can be a real benefit to a small business. They can bring different perspective and may have the benefit of excellent training at their previous employer. These employees may also be very enthusiastic about working for a smaller company where things are less formal.
If hiring, don’t be afraid to hire an older worker who may appear to be overqualified. Conventional wisdom is that they will jump ship when the economy and job market improve, but this is not always true. (And the Age Discrimination Enforcement Act makes it illegal to discriminate against older workers).
